Uzbekistan’s state hydropower developer Uzbekhydroenergo (UGE) and French generating firm EDF could work together on the development of the first pumped storage project in Uzbekistan after reaching preliminary agreements on operational ventures and organizational collaboration at a recent meeting.

On 14 April UGE’s senior management met with representatives of EDF, which concluded with momentum towards signing a future, formal Memorandum of Understanding which would create a deeper relationship between the firms.

A preliminary agreement specifically covered construction of a 200MW pumped storage power plant in the Bostanlyk district of the Tashkent region; installation of floating solar stations on reservoirs; and the creation of special working groups to discuss key organizational issues.

“It was our honour to have such constructive dialogue with an esteemed company such as EDF, and we look forward to continuing our conversations,” said Sanginov Abdugani, Chairman of JSC Uzbekhydroenergo. “Uzbekistan’s hydropower potential is growing, and we want to work with international, best-in-class partners who can help us achieve an optimal use of Uzbekistan’s natural resources, boost energy efficiency and increase renewable energy’s share in our country’s energy mix.”

From UGE, the meeting was attended by Sanginov Abdugani, Chairman of the Board, Makhmudov Fozil, Deputy Chairman of the Board, and Khasanov Khasan, Head of Division for Prospective Development and Attraction of Investments.
