VA Tech Hydro wins order for Pirris plant, Costa Rica

22 February 2008

The equipment package includes two Pelton turbines, vales, generators, steel linings and penstocks.

The contract was awarded by Costa Rica’s national power utility Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), and includes the design, delivery, erection supervision and commissioning of the equipment package.

Financing for the scheme is mostly provided by the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC).

About three-quarters of ICE’s output comes from hydropower. In a statement, VA Tech Hydro’s parent group Andritz said that the plant would contribute to transmission grid stability as well as meet growing electricity demand.
