4 July 2002

VOITH SIEMENS POWER Generation has won a modernisation contract for the Ala plant in Italy.

The Italian arm of the company has received the US$1.2M contract from ENEL Produzione for the rehabilitation of one complete Kaplan turbine at Ala. The rehabilitation includes all rotating parts including head and bottom cover. The runner of 4m diameter will have five new blades in stainless steel and a new hydraulic profile.

The Ala hydro station went into service in 1953. It houses two units with an output of 24MW each, at a head of 28.3m.

The plant uses the Adige river flow, downstream of Trento, diverted by a weir and conveyed, through a pressure tunnel extending for 9244m to the forebay and the underground power house.
