Voith takes majority stake in Green Highland Renewables

Voith Hydro has announced it acquired a majority shareholding of Green Highland Renewables (GHR) at the end of last year, expanding its business in the field of maintenance as well as operation and development of hydropower facilities.

The German supplier for hydropower equipment and the Scottish service provider have already worked on several hydropower plants together – with Voith Hydrosupplying electro-mechanical equipment and GHR responsible for development activities, service and operations at site.

“Our customers will benefit from a new single source approach and we together will be able to accompany them through the entire project lifecycle – including plant operation,” commented Moritz von Plate, Head of Voith Hydro’s HyService business unit.  “Apart from that, there is still a lot of room for growth for both of us. For example, GHR’s strong footprint in Scotland will be a great basis to service also larger hydropower projects and for the entry into the international markets where Voith Hydro is already active.”

Voith said that GHR has been one of the leading hydro companies in the UK, particularly in the small hydro sector with up to 20 MW of total output.  The companies have already identified projects where they will work together going forward, with more to come.

GHR started as developer for small (hydropower) projects in 2007. The company has accumulated a track record of around 50 successfully commissioned hydropower stations throughout Scotland. As full-scope service provider GHR supports plant owners with long-term, turnkey service contracts, performing not only monitoring, technical management, and regular maintenance, but also commercial and administrative management of the plants.

Currently there are around 40 plants under management ranging from several hundred kilowatts to almost 20MW in capacity. The Scottish company, with locations in Perth and Dingwall, employs around 20 highly skilled employees. The organizational structure and management of GHR will remain entrepreneurial in nature and operate under the established Green Highland Renewables brand.
