Welsh hydro scheme officially opens

26 July 2016

A 400kW hydroelectric project on the River Taff in Cardiff, Wales, will officially open today.

The Radyr Weir hydro scheme, which has been under construction since June 2015, features two 200kw, 3.5m wide Archimedes screw turbines and will produce enough power for 550 homes.

Alongside the turbines is a specially constructed fish pass with resting pools which was funded in partnership with Natural Resources Wales. This pass will allow migratory fish to swim upriver and spawn and there is also a channel specifically designed for eels and lampreys.
