Will FERC refuse licence renewals on Presumpscot river?

16 April 2001

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission(FERC) is being asked by environmental groups to withhold new licences for three hydro dams owned by Sappi Fine Paper company on the Presumpscot river in Maine, US. The dams are Saccarappa in Westbrook, Mallison Falls in Gorham and Little Falls in Windham. Environmental groups also want two other dams, Gambo in Windham and Dundee in Gorham, removed to make way for fishing habitats and to allow saltwater fish the fresh water they need to spawn.

The dams are among eight sited along the Presumpscot river between Sebago Lake and the Atlantic Ocean. The groups fighting to remove the three Sappi dams include the Atlantic Salmon Federation, Friends of Sebago, American Rivers and Friends of the Presumpscot River.
