NHPC Limited has declared commercial operation of the fourth 250MW unit at the 2000MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in northeastern India.
The unit, designated Unit 4, commenced commercial operation at 00:00 hrs on 8 May 2026, adding 250MW of hydropower capacity to India’s national grid.
The Subansiri Lower project, which is being developed across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, is planned with eight 250MW generating units. With the latest commissioning, the project has reached 1000 W of operational capacity.
Shri Bhupender Gupta, CMD, NHPC, thanked the Ministry of Power and the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam for their support. He also acknowledged the work of the Subansiri Lower project team led by Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director, and contributions from NHPC’s corporate office departments.
He stated that the commissioning demonstrates NHPC’s technical and project execution capabilities and supports India’s energy security objectives. He also said the remaining units are expected to be commissioned within the targeted timelines.
NHPC said the project is expected to support grid stability, meet peak power demand and assist integration of renewable energy into the national grid.
Before entering commercial operation, the unit completed its trial run on 1 May 2026.
The first unit at the project was commissioned at the end of 2025.
