NTPC, India’s largest power producer, has signed an agreement with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) to jointly develop a detailed roadmap for the company’s transition to cleaner energy sources.

The collaboration with SEforALL aims to align NTPC’s energy strategy with India’s net-zero goal for 2070, while supporting the country’s development and energy security objectives. The transition plan will assess various strategic scenarios, investment needs, and the socio-economic impacts of shifting to renewable energy.

“Our aim is to foster responsible, sustainable economic development through an energy strategy that champions energy security, social inclusiveness, environmental stewardship, and growth powered by data, technology, and innovation,” said Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC. “This agreement positions us to meet the rising demand from communities and industry while keeping us at the leading edge of the energy transition.”

The roadmap will build on NTPC’s existing clean energy initiatives, including green hydrogen pilot projects, floating solar photovoltaic systems, battery storage, pumped storage hydropower, and carbon capture technologies.

NTPC, founded in 1975, has been central to India’s industrial growth. In 2021, it became the first major Indian utility to join a UN Energy Compact, committing to install 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032. Although its capacity is still largely thermal-based, the company has significantly expanded its renewable portfolio and currently contributes nearly a quarter of India’s electricity.

“India continues to show climate leadership on the global stage, moving beyond commitment to concrete actions while demonstrating that the energy transition in emerging countries can co-exist alongside economic development,” said Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sustainable Energy for All. “We are excited to support NTPC to co-create a net zero roadmap for the energy giant of India. I laud NTPC for its commitment to transitioning to cleaner energy sources.”
