The company said that the new powerhouse and single unit arrangement was a fish-friendly design with wider flow passages, fewer rotating surfaces and improvements t the turbine intake screens.
Construction is to start in one year on the new powerhouse, which will sited just downstream of the current plant that has an installed capacity of 35MW. The new, single unit is to be commissioned in early 2011.
Rainbow dam was built 98 years ago.
