EDCOP was awarded the contract for the project following a competitive bidding process, and in a statement PSALM said the engineering and design services company has entered into a JV agreement with Tonkin & Taylor to carry out the work.
The work, which will be carried out over six months, will involve investigations of the major structures of Angat hydroelectric plant, including the 131m main rockfill dam and the 52m high dike dam. The study is expected to make recommendations to mitigate risks in these structures.
Constructed in the early 1960s, the Angat Dam and Dike is a multipurpose project for domestic water supply, irrigation, power, and flood control. It supplies 97% of the service area of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), generates approximately 246MW of power for the Luzon Grid through the Angat power plant, and irrigates 25,000ha of rice land for the National Irrigation Administration (NIA).
As a national security concern, the project is being undertaken in coordination with the MWSS, the NIA, the National Power Corporation, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Office of Civil Defense, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and the Provincial Government of Bulacan.
