China has commissioned a 2400MW pumped storage plant in the provincial capital of Guandong. The plant’s major function will be to back up the power systems of Hong Kong and Guangdong. The plant is affiliated with the Daya Bay nuclear power plant which is also in Guangdong.
The new plant was co-funded by the Guangdong Electric Power Company, Guangdong Nuclear Power Joint Venture Company and the State Development and Investment Corporation. The pumps and generating equipment were purchased with US$200M in loans from the French government and the Asian Development Bank.
