Webuild has raised the Rogun Dam in Tajikistan to an elevation of 1155m above sea level, marking another construction milestone at the 3600MW hydropower project.
The increase in the dam’s height will allow the reservoir water level to rise by a further 40m to an elevation of 1140m above sea level. The additional storage and hydraulic head will increase electricity generation from the two turbines already operating at the site.
Rogun is being developed in stages, allowing electricity to be generated while construction of the dam and associated works continues.
Webuild is carrying out Lot 2 of the project under a contract worth approximately US$2.3bn for OJSC Rogun HPP. The scope includes construction of the main dam, which will eventually reach a height of 335m.
The dam structure currently stands at approximately 190m of its planned final height. Around 49 million cubic metres of material have been placed to date, representing more than half of the total required volume.
More than 500,000 linear metres of drilling have also been completed as part of work to consolidate the dam foundation and construct the grout curtain.
Webuild said work on Lot 2 remains on schedule, with activities continuing on several fronts, including raising the dam structure and waterproofing its foundation.
Once completed, Rogun will have six 600MW generating units and a total installed capacity of 3,600MW. The project is expected to double Tajikistan’s electricity generation capacity and will form a major part of the country’s power system.
Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon recently visited the project with Prime Minister Qohir Rasulzoda and other government representatives to inspect construction progress and meet representatives of the project company and national institutions.
The Rogun project is being financed with support from the World Bank, Cassa Depositi e Prestiti and other international financial institutions.
At its planned height of 335m, Rogun is expected to become the world’s tallest dam.
