A review committee under the auspices of the Indian federal government has approved the revised schedule for the Sardar Sarovar project, which will now be completed by June 2005.
This follows a decision by India’s Suprement Court to disallow a petition by the environmental group, Save the Narmada Movement, seeking to stop the project.
Under the revised plan, the dam height will reach 110m by June 2003, 121m a year later, and the prescribed 138.66m by June 2005. All rehabilitation measures needed for each stage will be completed six months before each of the above respective dates.
