The Hume Dam Spillway project aims to minimise risk associated with failure of water storage in the Hume Dam, located on the Murray River. Although the dam has undergone substantial upgrading over the past 15 years, a recent review of the risk associated with failure of the storage identified the junction between the southern embankment and the concrete dam as being unacceptable.
SMEC will provide key improvements to these risk areas through design upgrade and contract supervision. SMEC’s services include retrofitting filters to depths of 40m in the embankment at the junction and utilising the drilled secant pile technique.
The Keepit Dam project involves upgrades to provide Probable Maximum Flood (PMF) capacity for the dam. SMEC is undertaking detailed design work for phase two for the Keepit Dam project, including: raising the concrete gravity dam by approximately 3m, installing post-tensioned anchors to address increased flood and seismic loading, raising the embankment dam using a parapet wall, modifying the spillway gates, upgrading the electrical supply and modifying the gantry crane.
