South Africa’s Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa and Lesotho Minister of Natural Resources Monyane Moleleki signed an agreement this week to cooperate in the project, which will include a water delivery system and a 1000-1200MW pumped storage project.
The water delivery system will include development of the Polihali Reservoir on the Senqu River, a tunnel connecting Polihali Reservoir with Katse Reservoir, access roads, camps, power transmission lines and administration centres, and associated social and environmental projects, Sowetan reported. The pumped storage project will use the existing Katse Reservoir, developed during the first phase of the project, as the lower reservoir.
Construction is expected to begin in 2012.
