NHPC Limited has started wet commissioning of Unit-I (250MW) of the 2000MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking the mechanical run of the first unit in India’s largest hydropower project. This is also NHPC’s largest unit capacity to date.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Shri Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, NHPC; Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, Director (Projects); Shri Suprakash Adhikari, Director (Technical); Shri Mahesh Kumar Sharma, Director (Finance); Shri Uday Sakharam Nirgudkar, Independent Director; Shri Santosh Kumar, Chief Vigilance Officer; and Shri Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director and Head of the Project. Senior officers from NHPC’s Corporate Office and project site were also present.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Bhupender Gupta thanked the Ministry of Power, Government of India, the Governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, former NHPC leadership, the Subansiri project team, executing agencies, and all stakeholders associated with the project. He said the achievement “is a proud emblem of NHPC’s engineering excellence, steadfast perseverance and India’s rising strength in global-scale projects.”

“This achievement is more than a project milestone,” he added. “It is a symbol of India’s unstoppable march towards a cleaner, greener and self-reliant energy future. Together, we flow forward, with the power of nature, innovation and national pride.”

With the successful wet commissioning of Unit-I, synchronisation with the national grid will begin soon. Three more 250MW units are expected to follow this year, adding 1,000MW of capacity. Once fully operational, the 8×250MW Subansiri Lower project will be India’s largest hydroelectric plant, contributing significantly to the country’s power supply and renewable energy goals.
