Xiaolangdi, the largest dam on China’s Yellow river, has started storing water, according to officials. If the current inflow continues the first power generating unit is expected to be commissioned by the end of 1999.
The 154m high rockfill dam was constructed by a joint venture led by Hochtief, Impregilo and Italstrade. The 1800MW hydro component of this multi-purpose project was financed with a US$1B loan from the World Bank.
In addition, flood control, ice control and water supply functions will be provided.
Located in central China’s Henan Province, 600km southwest of Beijing, the project is expected to be completed by 2001 at a total cost of about US$4.19B.
