The plant will take five years to complete at a cost of US$162M, and will generate 407MkWh of electricity a year. The first generating unit will become operational in December 2006. The plant, along with existing hydroelectric power plants, will fully meet the demand for electricity in central Tibet.
Zhigung construction launched
The construction of the Zhigung hydroelectric power plant has started in Tibet, according to the Xinhua news agency. The 100,000kW plant is being constructed on the Lhasa river in Maizhomunggar County and will have a reservoir of 225Mm3 capacity.
