22 December, 2010
Ten years have passed since publication of the World Commission on Dams’ final report. Suzanne Pritchard spoke to some of those involved in this revolutionary process in the big dams debate. But is WCD still topical now in 2010, or is it all just water under the bridge?

Facing reality on dam development
22 December, 2010
The World Commission on Dams report overlooked the benefits of and improvements made by dams to society, says ICOLD president Jia Jingsheng. In addition, its guidelines were somewhat idealistic. However ten years on, ICOLD believes that the negative impacts of project development should never be suppressed, overlooked or underestimated. The construction and operation of dams and hydropower projects can no longer be considered as a purely scientific and technical matter. A wide range of other aspects are involved today

Installing the Turbinator
22 December, 2010
CleanPower has installed its first Turbinator at the Hegset dam in Norway. The Turbinator combines an axial turbine and generator in a compact and sealed machine, and can utilise lost hydropower potential from environmental outlets

What lies beneath?
29 November, 2010
Underwater trees in reservoirs can pose a multitude of problems worldwide. Fault finding at Martis Creek Dam
29 November, 2010
Martis Creek Dam in the US is classified as a high-risk structure due to its history of excessive seepage and flooding risks associated with dam failure. During dam inspections, LiDAR technology helped to reveal a previously unrecognised active fault which could be the seismic source for future earthquakes. By Bruce Hilton, Ronn Rose and Lewis Hunter

Standard approach to turbine R&D
29 November, 2010
A US firm looking at a shaft-based system as a new approach to pumped storage has modified the concept and is also designing small, standardised pump-turbines for mass production. Report by Patrick Reynolds

Building Jinanqiao Dam

New spillway for Ulley dam
29 November, 2010
Rehabilitation work at Ulley dam in Rotherham, UK, was officially opened on 25 June 2010, exactly three years to the day since heavy rain caused the original overflow structure to collapse and left the Victorian dam in danger of failure. At a cost of almost US$6M, innovative engineering works have included the addition of a new spillway in the centre of the dam.
