Multiconsult of Norway has announced the opening of a new office in Ashford, Kent in England. This will service the company’s expanding portfolio of work, particularly in the hydro power sector. It is the first office in the UK that Multiconsult has opened and joins the company’s expanding network of offices around the world.

New Zealand news update

King Country Energy (KCE) has celebrated 50 years of power generation at its Kuratau power station in New Zealand’s North Island. Located on the western side of Lake Taupo, 30km northwest of Turangi, the 36m high, 70m long earth and rockfill dam has a mean annual output of 29GWh and utilises a head of 64m.

Vietnamese warning of irrigation water shortage

The Vietnamese Irrigation Management Company of Quang Ngai province has reported that only three out of 16 reservoirs managed and operated by the company have reserved enough irrigation water for agricultural production for the next crop. The three reservoirs were named as Vuc Thanh in Tra Bong, Hoc Sam in Mo Duc and So Hau in Duc Pho.

Mavel completes project in Belarus

Mavel has announced the recent commissioning of the Grodnenskaya hydroelectric project in the Republic of Belarus. Located on the Neman River, 8km from the city of Grodno, the project is owned by RUP Grodnoenergo. Mavel signed a contract to provide turbines and related technology for the project in July 2009. Financing was provided by the Czech Export Bank.

Ambuklao dam gets safety certification

The Philippine’s 105MW Ambuklao hydroelectric power plant has received confirmation of certification for its occupational safety and health management system (OSHMS). Mike Hossillos, vice president for Corporate Communications at SN Aboitiz Power, said that they have worked hard and the certification is an achievement of all company workers.

Climate targets will not be met without hydro power

The importance of renewable energies in achieving climate change targets and sustainable development has been discussed by the International Renewable Energy Alliance (REN Alliance) at COP18 in Doha, Qatar. At the event hydro power was described as being ’critical’ to achieving such targets.

Backing for building Pakistan’s dams

Khurram Baig, Business Editor of The Express Tribune in Pakistan, is backing construction of the Kabalah dam. In an article published on 3 December 2012 Baig said: ‘I know what I am going to say next will probably make most people cringe. We need to build the Kalabagh dam. We need to build lots of dams, but we also need to build the Kalabagh dam and our political leadership needs to show some maturity, and get it done. We have no choice.’

Hochtief to add to South American portfolio

Hochtief Solutions together with a partner has been awarded the contract for construction of the Alto Maipo hydro power plant in Chile. The contract volume of the project near Santiago amounts to around €215M, of which Hochtief has a share of roughly €150M. The project is owned by Chilean energy utility A.E.S. Gener.

Metro Vancouver utilising hydro potential at non-powered dams

Metro Vancouver in Canada is proposing to generate electricity from its dams during rain drenched months of the year. The supply of high quality drinking water will remain the first priority of a new water use plan for the Capilano and Seymour Watersheds, which includes the Cleveland dam. Built in 1954 to create Capilano Lake for water storage, the dam currently does not capture energy from spilled water.

The Board of Directors at the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has approved R$22.5B (US$10.7B) in financing for construction of the 11,233MW Belo Monte hydroelectric plant on the Xingu River in Brazil.
