Hochtief to add to South American portfolio

Hochtief Solutions together with a partner has been awarded the contract for construction of the Alto Maipo hydro power plant in Chile. The contract volume of the project near Santiago amounts to around €215M, of which Hochtief has a share of roughly €150M. The project is owned by Chilean energy utility A.E.S. Gener.

Alstom supplies equipment for biggest Colombian hydro plant

Alstom has been awarded a contract worth around €170M, by Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) to supply turbine and generator units for the Ituango hydro power plant on the Cauca river in Colombia. It will be the country’s biggest hydro plant generating 2400MW.

Alstom to equip Baixo Iguaçu plant, Brazil

Alstom has signed a contract with Neoenergia for the supply of three Kaplan hydro turbines, generators, control command and protection systems as well as electromechanical and erection equipment for the Baixo Iguaçu hydropower plant in Brazil. The total contract value is €160M, including hydromechanical and lifting equipment, with Alstom’s share around €110M.

Voith celebrates hydro history in York, Pennsylvania

Voith commemorated 135 years of hydropower manufacturing in the York area by hosting a celebration at its facility in West York, Pennsylvania. On Sunday, Voith employees and their families, customers, and honored guests including York-area Congressman Todd Platts were in attendance to celebrate the occasion. On Monday, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett spoke to Voith workers during an employee service recognition celebrating 1585 years of total service. “For 135 years, the turbines used to produce energy to power millions of homes and businesses have come from the York area, and Voith is proud to be a part of this rich history of American manufacturing,” said Voith Hydro President and CEO Kevin Frank. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of the community and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and our employees who keep this factory running day in and day out. Voith will continue to provide the equipment that generates the renewable energy to power America and drives economic growth for its people. We look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries in York and the United States.”Voith traces its York-area hydropower manufacturing lineage to 1877, when Stephen Morgan Smith began designing and making hydraulic turbines. The company, which would be incorporated as S. Morgan Smith, built a plant in York in 1890 and in 1953 began construction on a facility on East Berlin Road where Voith Hydro is currently located. The Voith connection goes back to the S. Morgan Smith days when members of the Voith family would travel by steamship from Europe to the US to visit the facility. In 1986, Voith Hydro acquired Allis-Chalmers, which had previously acquired S. Morgan Smith. When the original S. Morgan Smith plant opened in 1890, it employed 20 people. Today, Voith is a full-line supplier of hydropower equipment and services, including turbines, generators, and automation systems for both large and small hydro projects. Positive steps have been made in the right direction and the licensing of US hydropower projects has improved. However, problems still exist and have the potential to stifle further development. Members of the industry recently gave their testimonies in support of new legislation, which will be of particular benefit to small hydro development. Suzanne Pritchard reports.

Eagle Creek acquires third Mongaup River Valley hydro project

Eagle Creek Renewable Energy LLC has completed the purchase of the 7MW Swinging Bridge hydroelectric project from AER NY-Gen, complementing the company’s purchases earlier this year of the Mongaup Falls and Rio projects, creating a 21MW system of five reservoirs and three generating facilities within New York State’s Mongaup Valley.
