Water under the bridge?

Ten years have passed since publication of the World Commission on Dams’ final report. Suzanne Pritchard spoke to some of those involved in this revolutionary process in the big dams debate. But is WCD still topical now in 2010, or is it all just water under the bridge?

Facing reality on dam development

The World Commission on Dams report overlooked the benefits of and improvements made by dams to society, says ICOLD president Jia Jingsheng. In addition, its guidelines were somewhat idealistic. However ten years on, ICOLD believes that the negative impacts of project development should never be suppressed, overlooked or underestimated. The construction and operation of dams and hydropower projects can no longer be considered as a purely scientific and technical matter. A wide range of other aspects are involved today

Lest we forget: learning from international dam incidents

The combination of ageing dams, retirement of experienced dam engineers and increased consequences of dam failure due to downstream development underscore the need to better ensure the future safety of dams worldwide. Past experience must not be forgotten and lessons learned must be captured for future generations. The Centre for Energy Advancement through Technological Innovation (CEATI International) is paving the way forward in global communication, coordination and collaboration through their Dam Safety Interest Group (DSIG). This award recognizes an individual whose lifetime of dedication and achievement has contributed significantly to the dam engineering profession. Walz has been providing technical leadership on geotechnical issues affecting worldwide dam and water resource projects throughout his distinguished 45-year professional engineering career.
