Climate targets will not be met without hydro power

The importance of renewable energies in achieving climate change targets and sustainable development has been discussed by the International Renewable Energy Alliance (REN Alliance) at COP18 in Doha, Qatar. At the event hydro power was described as being ’critical’ to achieving such targets.

Romanian training on IHA protocol

Members of the Romanian hydro power industry completed an introduction to the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol during sessions organised by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in Bucharest last week. The workshop was hosted by the Faculty of Power Engineering at the University Politehnica of Bucharest. Staff from the university were joined by representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Romanian Water National Authority, Hidroelectrica, the Institute for Hydropower Studies, Hidroconstructia, CEZ Romania and the Romanian Small Hydropower Association.

Business leaders at a Regional Hydropower Forum were informed last week of agreements to purchase more than 2000MW of hydropower under Sarawak’s Corridor of Renewable Energy programme. The Forum, a one day event which took place in Kuching on 10 May, was organised by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB).

The news follows the International Hydropower Association’s (IHA) integral involvement in raising awareness of hydropower sustainability at the 6th World Water Forum in Marseille, 12-17 March 2012.
