Romanian training on IHA protocol

Members of the Romanian hydro power industry completed an introduction to the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol during sessions organised by the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in Bucharest last week. The workshop was hosted by the Faculty of Power Engineering at the University Politehnica of Bucharest. Staff from the university were joined by representatives from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, the Romanian Water National Authority, Hidroelectrica, the Institute for Hydropower Studies, Hidroconstructia, CEZ Romania and the Romanian Small Hydropower Association.

Common sense reform

Positive steps have been made in the right direction and the licensing of US hydropower projects has improved. However, problems still exist and have the potential to stifle further development. Members of the industry recently gave their testimonies in support of new legislation, which will be of particular benefit to small hydro development. Suzanne Pritchard reports.

Hydropower still has enormous unfulfilled potential in the US. Recent reports suggest that the country’s conventional hydro fleet could be expanded by 15% - without the construction of a single new dam. But can hydro find the right key to unlock such growth potential? Although the Department of Energy has been applauded for its research efforts into energising non-powered dams, the US Army Corps of Engineers has also been criticised for excluding hydro from recent proposals.
