Alstom to equip Shuakhevi hydro project, Georgia

A consortium led by Alstom has won a €30 million contract to supply equipment for the 178.6MW Shuakhevi hydropower plant in Georgia.

As part of the order, Alstom is to supply electro-mechanical equipment worth around €20 million including two Francis turbines (capacity: 89.3 MW, operating speed 600 rpm), governors and spherical type main inlet valves. The scope of the contract also includes 2 three-phase vertical shaft generators with salient pole design, 2 three-phase generator step up transformers, 220kv gas insulated switchyard, and an overhead electric crane.

Alstom says that the main turbines and generators will be manufactured at its Vadodara facility in Gujarat, India. Electrical and mechanical balance-of-plant equipment will be supplied by Alstom India and Alstom Turkey from sites based in both countries. The other members of the consortium are GES Turkey and GES Georgia Limited Company.

The Shuakhevi hydropower plant comprises 2 x 89.3MW units, and is expected to be commissioned in 2016. The project is being developed by the Adjaristsqali Georgia LLC - a consortium of Clean Energy Invest AS (Norway), The Tata Power Company Limited (India) and the International Financing Corporation.

The aim of the Shuakhevi hydropower plant is to supply Georgia as well as Turkey with clean renewable energy to meet the peak electricity demand during winter. It is one of three hydro projects planned by Adjaristsqali Georgia, and is part of one of the largest foreign direct investment projects in Georgia to date.
