Queensland Hydro has awarded FKG Group a contract valued at more than A$20m to deliver the Interim Civils package for the proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Project in Queensland, Australia.
The contract was awarded following a competitive procurement process and forms part of the project’s exploratory works phase.
The Interim Civils package includes enabling works such as access tracks, temporary creek crossings and portal pad preparation. These activities are intended to support planned underground tunnelling and surface geotechnical drilling programs.
Queensland Hydro is currently progressing a revised business case for the Borumba Project alongside the exploratory works program, which is aimed at gathering geotechnical, environmental and technical information to support future government decision-making.
The company said the exploratory works program does not represent a decision to proceed with construction of the project, which remains subject to future government approvals.
Geoff Scott, Queensland Hydro’s Executive General Manager – Delivery, said the interim civils works would support investigations designed to reduce project risk.
“The Interim Civils package enables a defined program of works that allow Queensland Hydro to mobilise underground tunnelling and surface geotechnical investigations,” Scott said. “Gathering this information early is critical to improving our understanding of ground conditions and technical requirements, which helps reduce risk uncertainty for the Project and ensures Queensland Hydro is well-informed as it progresses toward a final investment decision (FID).”
FKG Group is a privately owned Australian contractor providing civil and construction services across infrastructure and government projects.
Nick Gardner, Managing Director, FKG Group, said the company was pleased to support the project during the exploratory phase.
“FKG Civil is proud to be partnering with Queensland Hydro to deliver these important enabling works for the proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Project,” Gardner said. “This award reflects our team’s capability in delivering complex civil infrastructure projects safely, collaboratively, and efficiently across Queensland. We look forward to supporting Queensland Hydro as it progresses this critical renewable energy project through the exploratory works phase.”
Queensland Hydro said suppliers seeking opportunities connected to the Borumba Project can register through the VendorPanel Marketplace for direct procurement opportunities, or through Gateway by ICN for subcontracting and indirect supply opportunities with principal contractors.
