Finnish utility Kainuun Voima has signed an agreement with Caverion for the operation and maintenance of three hydropower plants in Kajaani, Finland.

The contract covers the Ämmäkoski, Koivukoski I–II and Koivukoski III plants, which together have an installed capacity of 30MW and annual generation of around 100,000MWh. The facilities operate with a total of five turbines and can adjust output in response to changes in electricity demand.

Kainuun Voima said the partnership is intended to support operational reliability and long-term lifecycle management of the plants through the introduction of new technology. The agreement also includes access to Caverion’s 24/7 remote monitoring centre.

“The collaboration supports the operational reliability of the plants and enables rapid response to exceptional situations,” said Kimmo Keinänen, chief executive of Kainuun Voima.

Caverion said the agreement would strengthen hydropower expertise in Finland and support local employment in the Kainuu region. The company has recruited three additional employees in Kainuu alongside its existing workforce of around 30 staff in the area.

“Maintaining energy production sites that are critical to security of supply requires strong technical expertise and long-term cooperation,” said Hannu Leskelä, regional director of industrial service centres at Caverion.

Hydropower remains an important part of Finland’s electricity system due to its flexibility and ability to respond quickly to fluctuations in production and consumption. Finland has around 250 hydropower plants with combined capacity of approximately 3.2GW. Hydropower accounted for around 17% of the country’s electricity production in 2024.
