Hindustan Construction Company (HCC) has been awarded a ₹127 crore (US$13.3m) contract by Wangchhu Hydroelectric Power Limited (WHPL), Bhutan, for construction works associated with the Wangchhu hydro project.
The contract covers the construction of diversion tunnels, hydromechanical gates and cofferdams. The works are scheduled for completion within nine months.
According to HCC, the award follows WHPL’s technical and financial evaluation process. The diversion works are intended to enable the early start of the project’s main civil works and support the overall implementation schedule of the Wangchhu hydro project.
The contract comes as Bhutan advances plans to expand its hydropower sector under its 13th Five-Year Plan (2024–2029). The government is targeting 6,000MW of installed hydropower capacity and continuing investment in large-scale hydroelectric developments.
HCC has been active in Bhutan for more than 30 years and has participated in several hydropower projects in the country, including Tala (1,020MW), Kurichu (60MW), Punatsangchhu-I (1,200MW), Dagachhu (114MW) and Nikachhu (118MW).
