Emergency funds allocated following Brazilian dam disaster

Mining company BHP Billiton has confirmed that Samarco has signed a commitment with Brazilian authorities to provide US$260M for an emergency fund following the incident at its iron ore operation on 5 November 2015. This will guarantee the allocation of money for a range of emergency measures including prevention, mitigation, remediation and compensation for environmental and social effects of the incident.

Eaton to lead electrical modernisation at Philpott Dam

Power management company Eaton has been awarded a US$5.4M contract from the US Army Corps of Engineers to lead a life extension and electrical modernisation project at Philpott Dam in Bassett, Virginia. The agreement includes the design, manufacturing, delivery, installation and commissioning of electrical powerhouse distribution and control systems, as well as oversight of the construction of a new building to house the upgraded electrical equipment.

Cube Hydro Partners acquire run-of-river facility in Pennsylvania

Cube Hydro Partners, a portfolio company of the ISQ Global Infrastructure Fund, has acquired a 100% ownership interest in York Haven hydro station. The 20MW run-of-river facility located in Pennsylvania, US is expected to produce over 130,000MWh annually.

Low water levels at Kariba intensify Zambian power crisis

Zambia’s power deficit is expected to widen by 42% next month as low water levels at Kariba dam affect hydropower production, according to reports by Bloomberg. The shortfall will increase to 1000MW from the current 700MW.

SSE releases preliminary results for 2015

UK energy company SSE has announced its preliminary results for the six months to 30 September 2015, during which adjusted profit before tax rose by 48.2% to £548.8M. The increase follows a wet and windier summer in Scotland and Ireland with higher renewable energy output, continued cost efficiencies across the group and an increase in business customers.

Contracts signed for Nyagakiii owner’s engineer

GOPA-International Energy Consultants from Germany, in association with ZolletIngegneria (a joint venture partner from Italy), have been procured by the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) as the owner’s engineer for the 5.5MW Nyagak III hydropower project on the River Nyagak in the Zombo District of Uganda.

Aquila Capital acquires Norwegian small hydro

Aquila Capital, one of Europe’s independent alternative asset managers, has won the bid to acquire Småkraft AS, the largest operator and developer of small scale hydropower plants in Norway. The acquisition will be the third public hydro transaction for Aquila Capital in 18 months and will further expand the firm’s footprint in the hydropower sector.

Abu Dhabi hydro project starts producing power in India

The United Arab Emirates’ Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA) has begun selling power from the 100MW run-of-the-river Sorang hydropower project in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. At full capacity, it can supply emissions-free electricity to 500,000 homes.
