The Government of the Republic of Indonesia will host the 2023 World Hydropower Congress alongside its electricity utility PLN and the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in Bali from 31 October to 3 November 2023.

Announcing the Congress during his visit to Abu Dhabi for the IRENA Assembly, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif said: “To assure energy stability, security and growth in the long term, our challenge is to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency as critical tools. Indonesia has enormous potential to drive its industrial development through renewable energy sources, especially hydropower. We are therefore delighted to bring the world together at this year’s Congress.”

The World Hydropower Congress will bring together decision-makers within and outside the hydropower industry to address how sustainable hydropower can help ensure energy security and reach global net zero emissions.

The Congress is organised biennially by the IHA. This year it will have a principal theme of ‘Powering Sustainable Growth’.

The Government of Indonesia’s hosting of the World Hydropower Congress follows their successful G20 Presidency during 2022.

“Indonesia has demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to the sustainable energy transition, including plans to use its vast potential of hydropower and other renewables to drive its economic development,” said Eddie Rich, IHA CEO. “Its Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions is perfectly aligned with the Congress’s theme of Powering Sustainable Growth. I’d like to thank the Indonesian Government and PLN in advance for their hospitality and their support for this event.”
