AXIA Energia has awarded ANDRITZ a contract to modernise automation systems at the Itumbiara hydropower plant in Brazil.
The plant, which has six generating units with a total capacity of 2082MW, is one of the largest hydropower facilities in the country. The upgrade is intended to improve operational reliability, safety and efficiency.
The order, valued in the lower double-digit million-euro range, was included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the fourth quarter of 2025.
Located on the border of Goiás and Minas Gerais, the Itumbiara plant has been in operation since 1980. The contract includes the full replacement of protection, control and supervision systems, as well as voltage and speed governors, mechanical components and associated equipment.
“Upgrading these systems is essential to address technological obsolescence and strengthen operational resilience,” says Sérgio Gomes, Sales Director at ANDRITZ Hydropower Brazil.
ANDRITZ will supply new automation systems covering generator excitation, protection, turbine governing, synchronization, and plant-wide monitoring and control. The company will deploy its HIPASE platform along with cybersecurity measures.
The modernisation is expected to support long-term efficiency, system security and sustainability in Brazil’s energy sector.
Earlier this month, ANDRITZ announced it has secured an order from Tata Power to supply pumped storage units for the 1000MW Bhivpuri pumped storage plant in Maharashtra, India.
