Doosan Enerbility has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Southern Power (KOSPO) to cooperate on the local manufacturing of pumped storage hydropower (PSH) plant components.
Under the MOU, Doosan Enerbility will work on securing proprietary technology for PSH component engineering and manufacturing, in collaboration with global partners. KOSPO will provide facilities for testing locally manufactured products and support the development of sales channels.
The South Korean government’s 11th Basic Plan for Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand includes the construction of nine PSH plants with a combined capacity of 5.7GW by 2037. Doosan Enerbility said it plans to expand the use of Korean-made products in PSH projects with KOSPO to strengthen the domestic industrial ecosystem.
“With more pumped-storage hydropower plants being built recently, the need is also growing for technological self-reliance in plant component engineering and manufacturing,” said Yeonin Jung, Vice Chairman and COO of Doosan Enerbility. “By collaborating with KOSPO, which has provided us with the environment for conducting product demonstrations, we plan to expedite the localization of PSH plant components manufacturing.”
The agreement follows Doosan’s KRW 330 billion supplier contract signed in June with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) for components of the Yeongdong Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant Units 1 and 2. Doosan is also working with ANDRITZ to support Korea’s efforts to achieve technological independence in PSH component engineering.
