EFLA has signed a contract with Icelandic power producer Landsvirkjun to supervise construction of the expansion of the Sigalda hydropower plant in Iceland.
Construction work has started, with EFLA responsible for supervision throughout the construction period. Completion is scheduled for 2029.
The project will expand the existing powerhouse and add a fourth generating unit, together with a new pressure pipe. The drainage channel closest to the power station will also be widened.
Once completed, the project will increase Sigalda’s installed capacity by 65MW, from 150MW to 215MW. The expansion is intended to increase generation capacity and provide greater flexibility within Iceland’s electricity system.
EFLA’s contract also covers supervision of associated improvements and maintenance work. The company said the assignment will draw on expertise in civil engineering, construction supervision, quality and safety.
EFLA will work with Norwegian engineering consultancy Multiconsult on the project.
