The first US$276M, 250MW unit has been commissioned for the 1000MW Koyna (stage IV) hydro power project, located in India’s western Maharashtra state. The project is being executed by the State Irrigation Department.
Koyna IV will be the first plant in India to have four high head Francis turbines, each with a capacity of 250MW, the latest microprocessor-based protection system and 420MW power cables. The project will also have 25 tunnels spread over a length of 42km. The second 250MW unit is currently being tested and is scheduled for commissioning by April 2000.
