The French Development Agency (AFD) has agreed to provide EUR 61 million in funding for Mohmand/Munda and Harpo hydropower projects in Pakistan with a total capacity of 775MW.
The 740MW Mohmand / Munda hydropower project is located in the Mohman agency of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the funding will be used to finance phase I of the project, which includes the detailed engineering design and preparatory works.
The 35MW Harpo project is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu region. The project is being developed to meet future electricity demand in the region and establish a local transmission and distribution network. The Harpo hydroelectric project is also being part funded by the German government.
The funding agreement for both projects was signed this week in Pakistan by Ms. Nargis Sethi, Secretary of Economic Affairs Division (EAD), Philippe Thibaud, Ambassador of France to Pakistan, and Denis Cassat, Country Director of the AFD. The AFD is already supporting other hydropower projects in Pakistan, including the 22MW Jabban project, the 48MW Jaggran II project, and it recently approved a grant of EUR 2.5 million to establish a new hydropower training institute in Mangla.
