Konecranes has won two contracts from AXIA Energia to modernise overhead and gantry cranes at two hydroelectric power plants in Brazil.
The contracts, signed in May 2026, cover five cranes at the Manso and Mascarenhas de Moraes plants. Deliveries and modernisation work are scheduled for 2027.
The projects form part of AXIA Energia’s wider programme to upgrade its hydropower generation facilities. The cranes and gantries will be used to support turbine maintenance and modernisation work at the plants.
Konecranes’ scope includes the electrical and mechanical modernisation of two overhead cranes and three gantry cranes. Work will include replacing drives and drive motors, installing new braking systems and variable frequency drives, and upgrading control and automation systems. Radio remote controls will also be installed and operator cabins modernised.
At the Mascarenhas de Moraes Hydroelectric Power Plant in Minas Gerais, Konecranes will modernise a gantry crane equipped with a 200-tonne main hoist and a 25-tonne auxiliary hoist. The work is scheduled for February 2027.
At the Manso Hydroelectric Power Plant in Mato Grosso, the company will modernise four cranes. These comprise two overhead cranes with capacities of 65/15/5 tonnes and two gantry cranes with capacities of 20 tonnes and 15 tonnes. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
“Hydropower plant modernisations place high demands on lifting equipment and its reliability. By upgrading the cranes’ mechanical and control systems, we are preparing the equipment for intensive use during the turbine modernisation projects and improving its safety, reliability and availability to support the plant upgrades,” commented Fellipi Pereira, Senior Account Executive, Konecranes.
