Jamaica Public Services (JPS) 7.2MW Maggotty hydroelectric project has been officially commissioned in St Elizabeth, the single largest hydro development since the country’s independence.

In a ceremony held yesterday, the Minister of Science, Technology, Energy & Mining, Hon. Phillip Paulwell, commissioned the US$36 million project.

Located on the Black River, the project is the ninth hydroelectric scheme operated by JPS.

The project is an expansion of an existing scheme and included the installation of a new powerhouse including two new Francis turbines. It was initially expected to have an installed capacity of 6.3MW, but final designs of the project allowed for a maximum capacity of 7.2MW of electricity.
