No positive stability assessments for 32% of Vale’s dams

2 October 2020

Thirty-three of Vale’s 104 dam structures in Brazil have not received positive stability assessments from its dam monitoring system, the mining firm said this week.

The firm, who operated the failed tailings dam at Feijão mine in the city of Brumadinho, Minas Gerais, said that 32 of the 33 dams that failed to get a positive stability assessment were in its ferrous metals operations.

According to newswire reports, Vale is currently building containment walls around five of these dams, and local populations have been moved away from other structures.
