US$186M order for Itaipu

A US$186M order has been awarded for two new generating units at the Itaipu hydro power plant. voith-siemens Hydro Power Generation is responsible for the supply of parts of the turbine and generators corresponding to 50% of the equipment supply, with the remaining 50% shared among other members of the consortium, CEITAIPU.

The two new units will generate 700MW, at 60Hz and 50Hz respectively, bringing Itaipu's installed capacity to 14,000MW. The units will be commissioned in January and April 2004.

Itaipu is located on the Parana river and has been jointly developed by Brazil and Paraguay.
