NHPC has begun wet commissioning of Unit-2 of the 2000MW Subansiri Lower hydroelectric project, the company announced on 6 November 2025. The 250MW unit completed its first mechanical run, marking the start of commissioning for the project’s second generating unit.
Earlier, Unit-1 (250MW) of the same project entered wet commissioning in late October 2025, putting the first unit of India’s largest hydropower project into its operational testing phase.
The event for Unit-2 was joined virtually by NHPC Chairperson and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta from the company’s corporate office in Faridabad, along with functional and independent directors. Senior officials, including Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director and Head of the Subansiri project, and I.P. Ranjan, Executive Director (O&M), were present at the project site.
Gupta thanked the Ministry of Power, the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, previous NHPC leadership, project teams, and partner agencies involved in the development. He said the progress at Subansiri reflects the company’s technical capabilities and called on the project team to maintain momentum as remaining units move toward commissioning.
With Unit-2 entering wet commissioning, synchronization of two units – 500MW in total – has begun. Two additional 250MW units are scheduled to follow. Once all eight units are completed, Subansiri Lower will become India’s largest hydroelectric project.
Rajendra Prasad acknowledged the contributions of corporate teams and partner firms including BGS-SGS-SOMA, TREL, Patel Engineering Ltd., and GE Vernova. He urged teams to sustain their efforts as the project moves toward full completion.
