ONE Nordic has announced a major investment in a new construction department aimed at strengthening its capabilities in regional grid infrastructure and hydropower projects.

The company said the new unit will complement its existing operations and enable it to deliver both construction and contracting services for regional grid stations and large hydropower owners.

Sweden’s electricity system is undergoing significant modernisation to address future capacity shortages and rising demand. Two key components of the country’s energy infrastructure are regulated hydropower, which supports system stability and balances variable generation, and the national transmission grid with its transformer stations. The grid currently faces capacity constraints, particularly in transmitting electricity from northern Sweden to other parts of the country.

Grid expansion and hydropower modernisation projects are large-scale and resource-intensive, requiring coordination among multiple contractors and long-term planning with asset owners and network operators.

As part of the expansion and digitalisation of hydropower facilities, demand is increasing for engineering and design expertise. In response, ONE Nordic is establishing a dedicated design department to work alongside its traditionally field-based workforce.

The new department will operate from two hubs. One will be located in Enköping, where the company already has a base for hydropower operations with a focus on technical solutions. The second hub will be in Skåne, supporting its regional grid activities.

According to Jörgen Vidström, CEO of ONE Nordic Hydro, integrating design and construction capabilities will strengthen the company’s ability to deliver projects from planning through commissioning: “Sweden’s electricity infrastructure is facing a crucial shift. By bringing together design and construction under one roof, we are strengthening our ability to build the electricity and hydropower of the future – from drawing board to commissioned facility.”
