Operations at the Itaipu project, which meets 20% of Brazil’s energy needs, were back to normal at 6 am local time, with power restored to most of the country. Local media reports suggest that the power failure occurred after a storm knocked out two transmission lines at the project, with a third line overloading.
This was the first time that Itaipu had been completely shut down since it began operating in May 1984.
