POWERCHINA has completed and formally handed over Section II of Bolivia’s Ivirizu Hydropower Station, the country’s largest hydropower project to date. Representatives of the project owner and the supervisory unit signed the handover documents recently, confirming the project’s acceptance.

The Ivirizu project is located in Totora, Cochabamba. POWERCHINA built the roller compacted concrete gravity dam in Section I and, in Section II, constructed the diversion tunnel, access roads, primary and secondary water intake facilities, metal structures, and camp facilities.

Bolivian officials consider the project an important part of the country’s energy plans, expanding domestic renewable power capacity and supporting a shift toward cleaner energy sources.

POWERCHINA said the project demonstrates its capability in overseas water and hydropower construction and strengthens energy cooperation between China and Bolivia.

Once fully operational, the hydropower station is expected to support local economic activity, and contribute to Bolivia’s long-term energy independence.
