A major engineering milestone has been achieved at the Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project, where teams have successfully completed the hydrostatic testing of what is described as the world’s largest penstock system.
According to project engineer Umair Laique, the test – covering the main penstock and its complex branch pipe network known as the Beta Block – was completed after 64 continuous hours of coordinated work. The process required the injection of more than 10,000m3 of water, alongside detailed design calculations, rigorous quality control, and close technical collaboration.
The achievement highlights the joint efforts of Chinese and Pakistani engineers working on the project, reflecting the broader cooperation underpinning major infrastructure developments linked to the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor.
The Tarbela 5th Extension is part of the wider Tarbela Dam complex on the Indus River, one of the largest earth-filled dams in the world. Originally completed in the 1970s, Tarbela has undergone multiple expansion phases to boost generating capacity and help meet Pakistan’s growing electricity demand.
Once operational, the fifth extension is expected to add approximately 1,530 megawatts of installed capacity, reinforcing Pakistan’s reliance on hydropower as a key renewable energy source. Hydropower already accounts for a significant share of the country’s electricity mix, providing relatively low-cost and low-carbon generation compared to thermal alternatives.
Hydrostatic testing of penstocks is a critical commissioning step, ensuring structural integrity and operational safety under high pressure. The scale and complexity of the Tarbela 5th Extension system make this test particularly notable within the global hydropower sector.
Despite technical and logistical challenges throughout construction, the successful completion of this phase signals steady progress toward full commissioning. Engineers involved in the project say the milestone strengthens confidence in the long-term safety and reliability of the facility.
