Energie AG says construction of the Ebensee pumped storage hydropower project in Upper Austria is progressing on multiple fronts, with excavation of the underground powerhouse cavern now complete.
The company has finished excavation work on the cavern and is currently carrying out stabilisation measures. Concrete and steel construction activities have also begun and are expected to intensify over the coming months.
The cavern measures approximately 53m long, 26m wide and 41m high.
Construction progress is also becoming more visible above ground. Large steel components have been transported to the site along Langbathstraße in recent weeks and are being installed as part of the scheme. The work includes positioning steel pipes measuring 3.2m in diameter and 14m in length within the pressure tunnel, before they are welded and encased in concrete.
Work is also continuing on the upper reservoir, where current activities focus on sourcing and placing material for the main dam. Pipeline installation is also under way along forest roads in the project area.
Energie AG describes the Ebensee pumped storage plant as a key element of its corporate strategy. With investment of almost €500 million, it is the largest single project in the company’s history.
