Making a case for sedimentation
29 June, 2012
According to the International Sediment Initiative (ISI), sedimentation issues are often ignored because the scale of the problem can seem too overwhelming. Recent research by ISI is working towards creating a holistic approach to the remediation and conservation of surface waters, with the management of dams and reservoirs playing a key part. Suzanne Pritchard takes a closer look at ISI’s recent interim case study report.

Seismic aspects of underground structures

Dr Martin Wieland discusses the seismic design and performance criteria of underground structures of hydropower plants in a qualitative way on the basis of the seismic safety criteria applicable to large dams, approved by the International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD).

Downgrading hydro’s dirty image
22 June, 2012
An international team of scientists claims to have amassed the largest data set to date on greenhouse gas emissions from hydroelectric reservoirs. While their analysis has downgraded the GHG impact of such reservoirs, importance has also been placed on the role that site design and location can play in minimising carbon dioxide and methane emissions.

Efficiency focus
03 November, 2011
While agriculture in many regions is served by irrigation and more projects are built or modernised, water availability and its efficient use are of increasing concern, as Patrick Reynolds reports

Facing reality on dam development
22 December, 2010
The World Commission on Dams report overlooked the benefits of and improvements made by dams to society, says ICOLD president Jia Jingsheng. In addition, its guidelines were somewhat idealistic. However ten years on, ICOLD believes that the negative impacts of project development should never be suppressed, overlooked or underestimated. The construction and operation of dams and hydropower projects can no longer be considered as a purely scientific and technical matter. A wide range of other aspects are involved today

Lest we forget: learning from international dam incidents
28 October, 2010
The combination of ageing dams, retirement of experienced dam engineers and increased consequences of dam failure due to downstream development underscore the need to better ensure the future safety of dams worldwide. Past experience must not be forgotten and lessons learned must be captured for future generations. The Centre for Energy Advancement through Technological Innovation (CEATI International) is paving the way forward in global communication, coordination and collaboration through their Dam Safety Interest Group (DSIG). A selection of case studies from the organisation’s recent workshop on international dam incidents and failures is presented below
