Guangzhou Development Group has completed equity acquisitions and related registration changes for two pumped storage projects in Yunnan Province, China, with a combined planned capacity of 2.6GW.
The Fumin project has a planned capacity of 1,400MW and the Lufeng project 1,200MW. According to the company, both are on the priority implementation list under China’s national pumped storage development plan. It said they were the first and second pumped storage projects in Yunnan to receive approval and begin construction, respectively.
Guangzhou Development Group described the acquisitions as its first move into pumped storage. The projects form part of the planned clean energy base in central Yunnan and are intended to provide energy storage, peak regulation, frequency regulation and emergency backup services to the provincial grid.
The company said it would focus on building and operating the two projects during China’s 15th Five-Year Plan period. It did not give commissioning dates or disclose the value of the acquisitions.
